Dr. Salil Khandwala, our Medical Director, is now a certified yoga instructor!
He received his training and certification from the famous Yoga University in Bangalore, South India called SVYASA– Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samasthana.
S-VYASA is a deemed University in India that offers Masters and PhD programs in Yoga with emphasis on health. The students publish extensively on several medical applications of yoga. These papers are published in several journals such as the International Journal of Yoga.
The main reason why Dr. Khandwala got certified in yoga is to offer yoga therapy to his patients with pelvic floor dysfunction.
Dr. Khandwala and AUGM are about to start two clinical trials in pelvic floor dysfunction. These have been approved by the Beaumont ethic committee. The first one is on overactive bladder (got-to-go problem) and the other one is on bladder pain syndrome.
The primary goal is to evaluate the improvement in symptoms without taking medications. The secondary goal is to assess the benefits of adding yoga therapy to patients who are already on medications and to see whether there is greater benefit to their condition and overall health and to see whether it is possible to reduce the dependence on medications and completely manage the condition by way of lifestyle modifications with yoga being at its core.
Dr. Khandwala strongly believes that Yoga therapy is complimentary to Allopathic medicine. Sadly, modern day fast-paced medicine has fallen victim to the notion of instant gratification. Healthcare has become all about giving a medication or performing a procedure. Importance of Lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise have been completely forgotten. This has in fact created a scenario where patients are demanding more and more of the instant gratification that comes with greater side-effects and cost. Without lifestyle modifications, most illnesses will never improve. Yoga enables the acceptance of lifestyle changes as it works on the mind. The main goal of yoga is to silence the distractions of the furtive mind. By controlling the mind, yoga helps the patient be more compliant with the lifestyle modifications. Yoga practice by itself is an excellent physical, mental and spiritual work out.
Yoga therapy will be provided at our office under direct supervision of Dr Khandwala and his team.
