Urinary incontinence is very common problem in women. This condition is very common as it affects at least 1 in 3 women. The 2 most common types of urinary incontinence are stress urinary incontinence and urgency urinary incontinence.
Stress urinary incontinence is essentially urinary leakage that happens with any strenuous activities such as coughing, straining, jumping or exercising. This is one of the most common causes of urinary leakage in younger active women in their 30s and 40s.
In the past, bladder suspension surgery was the treatment of choice for urinary stress incontinence. This required a belly incision as long as a hysterectomy incision and the patient was in the hospital for a few days. There have been on a lot of changes over the past few decades. Presently, we have started managing urinary incontinence completely in the office under local anesthesia where the patient is fully awake. We perform our patented DISST technique. Our results have been excellent with this technique with almost 97% success.
The major advantage of doing the procedure in the office is patient satisfaction, comfort besides the lower cost. The anxiety that is induced by going to the hospital setting or a surgical procedure area is significant for any surgical procedure.
